Home Indoor Conservation

  • Store drinking water in the refrigerator.  Do not let the tap run while waiting for cool water to flow.
  • Never pour water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or garden, or performing cleaning activities around your home.
  • Place a bucket in the shower to catch excess water.  Use this excess for watering plants.  You may employ the same technique when washing dishes or vegetables in the sink.
  • Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded.  Set the water level to match the size of load.
  • When hand washing dishes, fill one sink or basin with soapy water.  Quickly rinse with a slow moving stream from the faucet.
  • Do not thaw meat or other frozen items using running water.  Defrost the item overnight or by using the defrost setting on the microwave.
  • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.  Tissues, insects, and debris should be disposed of in the trash.
  • Take shorter showers and take a shower, not a bath.
  • Turn off the water while shaving, brushing your hair, and washing your hands.
  • Install water softening systems only when necessary.  Save water and salt by running the minimum amount of regenerations necessary to maintain water softness.  Turn off the system when away on vacation.
  • Install aerators with flow restriction on all faucets to slow the flow of water.
